Brighter, whiter smiles are highly desirable. A great smile is a very attractive feature and implies health, youth and vitality.
However, with time our teeth do discolour. For those that smoke, drink tea, coffee, red wine or consume other foods and drinks with strong colourings, the teeth are likely to discolour or darken earlier. Tooth decay, fillings and tartar build-up can also cause discolouration.
Tooth whitening is a popular choice. At ICC Dental, we offer professional tooth whitening with our cosmetic dentists. This is a safe and effective procedure which will make a real difference.
Our reconstructive patients (those who are having crowns or bridges) will very often have their natural teeth whitened to match to a new crown or bridge (it is more appealing and effective than having to have a yellow crown made!). Whitening won't work on existing false teeth, crowns, veneers or fillings, but these could be replaced with lighter ones for a more complete transformation.
However, tooth whitening doesn't have to be part of a major dental work. We offer teeth whitening for patients who are simply looking to freshen up their natural teeth, or those who have had teeth whitening previously and are looking for a refresh.
Professional teeth whitening or bleaching is only carried out by dentists.
In order to whiten the teeth, a special gel is placed on the outer surfaces of your teeth and a protective seal is put in place to cover your gums. A special, bright light is used to speed up the whitening process so that immediate results can be seen. This is an "in clinic" process for rapid results.
As an alternative, home whitening is available under dentist supervision. In this case, you will be given specially made mouth trays that fit your teeth exactly together with a supply of bleaching gel. You will need to wear the mouth trays for 30 minutes to one hour, over a period of two to four weeks to provide a progressive whitening result. This can then be "topped up" at any time with additional supplies of the whitening gel.
