aftercare
You are here: homefor patientsaftercare
Having dental reconstruction or cosmetic dentistry work can be a big step.
However, having the best possible outcome is a shared commitment between the patient, ICC Dental and (where appropriate) the patient's own dentist.
immediate aftercare
local anaesthetic
-
we often use a local anaesthetic during treatment, the effects of which normally last 3-4 hours
-
avoid hot drinks or food while your mouth is numb, as you may burn yourself without noticing
-
there is also a danger of biting/chewing your mouth, tongue, lips or cheeks. If possible, avoid chewing and eating until sensation has returned
sedation
-
conscious sedation allows our dentists to carry out complex work, sometimes taking several hours
-
this avoids general anaesthetic and allows rapid advancement of your treatment, accomplishing in a day what would normally take several sessions
-
however, you will not be fit to drive after sedation and should arrange someone to take you home and care for you while any sedation wears off
caring for your new teeth
We'll ensure that patients are fully briefed as to how to care for their "new teeth". Exact advice will be specific to the procedures you have had and you will be fully informed about what to expect so that you can plan accordingly. Advice for the first couple of weeks may include:
-
avoid any excessive pressure on the new teeth
-
medication: Take antibiotics and pain relieving pills as prescribed. Finish the course of antibiotics. If you have a reaction to the medication, please telephone the practice. Only take painkillers when needed.
-
hygiene: You will need to ensure good hygiene but may be advised against brushing, in which case rinse with Mouthwash twice a day to keep the teeth clean and undisturbed
-
exercise: Avoid strenuous physical activity which could cause bleeding
-
alcohol: Avoid alcohol for 2 weeks as this can affect the healing of the delicate mouth tissues
-
smoking: Avoid smoking for 3 days before treatment and 2 weeks after as this will also slow down the healing process around the teeth implant. If you can, quit smoking! This will help your body to heal faster.
-
food & drink: Avoid very hot drinks, spicy/acidic foods and foods requiring a lot of chewing e.g. steak.
-
ice packs: you may be advised to use a cold icepack to reduce swelling
You will receive specific advice on aftercare and can contact us at any stage for any further questions or concerns.
Oral hygiene and good aftercare are vitally important.
Our dental hygienists are highly skilled and experienced in caring for "new teeth" and can provide excellent advice as well as vital hygiene care.
